WhatsApp to introduce logout option with data retention choice

New logout feature will let WhatsApp users sign out without losing data, offering more flexibility for breaks or account switching.

WhatsApp is working on a long-awaited feature that will allow users to log out of their accounts without uninstalling the app or wiping all their data. The new option, discovered in beta version 2.25.17.37 for Android, was revealed through a teardown by Android Authority and AssembleDebug. It is currently marked with an “Internal” badge, meaning it’s being tested within the company but is not yet available to public beta testers.

Logout Finally Comes to Mobile

Until now, WhatsApp users on mobile had limited ways to sign out. Android users had to clear app data manually through system settings, while iOS users needed to uninstall the app entirely. In contrast, WhatsApp Web and desktop apps have long had a simple logout button.

The upcoming feature changes this by introducing a dedicated Logout option within the Settings > Account menu. This adjustment is expected to make managing WhatsApp accounts more user-friendly, especially for those who frequently switch devices or numbers.

Three Options on Logging Out

Once live, the Logout feature will present users with three clear choices:

  1. Erase all Data & preferences – Logs the user out and deletes all app data, including chats and media, from the device. However, it does not remove the user from any groups.

  2. Keep all Data & preferences – Logs the user out but retains chats, files, and settings on the device. When logging back in with the same number, everything is restored.

  3. Cancel – Allows the user to back out of the logout process.

The second option in particular is aimed at users who want to take a break from WhatsApp without losing any information, offering a more graceful way to disconnect temporarily.

Designed for Convenience and Control

This feature is expected to be a welcome improvement for those who don’t use dual-SIM devices but still want to switch between multiple WhatsApp accounts. It’s also ideal for users looking to take a short break from the platform without undergoing the hassle of reinstalling or reconfiguring their settings afterward.

Compared to other messaging apps like Telegram, which already offer a logout function with retained data, WhatsApp has been slow to adopt this level of flexibility. The addition could bring WhatsApp more in line with current user expectations.

Although the logout option has been spotted in development, there is no official word from WhatsApp or its parent company Meta on when the feature will be released. It is expected to arrive first for beta testers before being rolled out to all users in a future stable update.
