The third and final season of Netflix’s Squid Game premiered today, finally unveiling the fates of Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae), the Front Man (Lee Byung-hun), and the deadly games themselves. While Squid Game Season 3 certainly feels like a definitive series finale, the closing moments hint that the franchise’s story may not be over just yet.
Season 3 wraps up with a jaw-dropping celebrity cameo that strongly suggests a spin-off could be on the horizon—this time set in the United States. Could an American Squid Game really be in the works? Ever since the original series became a global sensation in 2021, there have been rumors that Netflix might expand the franchise internationally.
The most enticing of these possibilities has always been an English-language version set in the U.S. So when Oscar-winner Cate Blanchett appears as a Los Angeles-based recruiter in Season 3, Episode 6 (“Humans Are…”), it feels like Netflix is quietly teasing Squid Game USA.

But is this truly the end of Squid Game? Could Blanchett’s cameo simply be a fun surprise rather than the start of something bigger? And is David Fincher still involved in bringing an American Squid Game to life? Could the spin-off arrive sooner than we expect?
Will There Be an American Version of Squid Game?
The answer? Maybe — and probably. Rumors about Netflix developing a U.S.-set Squid Game have swirled for years, though there’s been little official confirmation. Last year, Deadline reported that David Fincher was working on the project, with Dennis Kelly reportedly penning the script. Netflix declined to comment at the time.
Since that report, Fincher has also been linked to Netflix’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood sequel, so it’s unclear whether he’s still involved in Squid Game: America. Fresh rumors today claim production could begin in December 2025, meaning Fincher’s availability might align for him to direct the pilot.

Meanwhile, series creator Hwang Dong-hyuk hasn’t ruled out the idea of spin-offs. In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, he shared that he’s considering a series set between Seasons 1 and 2. “I’m not saying I’ll never explore sequels or spin-offs — never say never,” he said.
Cate Blanchett’s cameo in the Squid Game Season 3 finale certainly hints at an American version, but it remains unclear whether she’s officially attached to any future project, or if her appearance was just a one-time surprise for fans.
