Lt. Gen. (retd) Muzammil Hussain has resigned as the Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda) chairman. He served as the Chairman for more than five years.
The WAPDA Chairman sent his resignation to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, citing personal issues for his decision to quit the office.
“Mr. Prime Minister, I will be unable to proceed in this position moving forward due to personal and family compulsions and would like to request acceptance of my resignation from this onerous assignment as Chairman WAPDA,” Lt. Gen. (R) Muzammil Hussain wrote in his resignation letter that is making the rounds on social media.

Furthermore, in his resignation, the general discussed the performance of WAPA under him. He also thanked his team, the government, and the higher judiciary.

Hussain had first been appointed to the post on Aug 24, 2016 by the then prime minister Nawaz Sharif. Later in August 2021, the Ministry of Water Resources appointed him for a second consecutive term of five years.
PM Shehbaz Sharif’s instructions
It is important to note that PM Shehbaz, during his visit to the Diamer-Bhasha Dam site last month, directed the Wapda chief to ensure the completion of this vital project in 2026, ahead of its timeline of 2029.
The prime minister issued the instructions during his visit to the site to inspect the project’s pace of work and activities. In his address to the project staff and Wapda officials, PM Shehbaz credited his elder sibling and former premier Nawaz Sharif for “launching the project in 2016”.

The prime minister said power generation from the project, once it begins, would help the economy immensely along with fulfilling irrigation requirements and protecting the country from flash floods. He added it would make the country “prosperous and progressive”.
