Maryam Nawaz makes major blunder at Layyah jalsa

Maryam Nawaz urged the public to vote for PML-N as they would be voting for development besides the creation of new tehsils. Then with full gusto vowed that Layyah will become a tehsil - which is already a district.

PML-N Vice President Maryam Nawaz is once again garnering mockery on social media for her latest slip of tongue where she confuses districts and tehsils during her jalsa in Layyah ahead of Punjab by-polls.

While addressing a crowd during the Layyah jalsa, Maryam Nawaz urged the public to vote for PML-N as they would be voting for better governance, schools, and overall development besides the creation of new tehsils. Then with full gusto vowed that Layyah will become a tehsil – which is already a district.

PML-N workers standing on the stage with her pointed out the mistake and Maryam Nawaz corrected herself saying Chowk Azam will become a tehsil. However, netizens on social media were quick to criticize Maryam Nawaz for her blunder.

To clarify, in Pakistan, a tehsil is an administrative sub-division of a District. The Layyah District has three tehsils with Chowk Azam as one of the main towns. For confusing Layyah with Chowk Azam, Twitteratis called out Maryam Nawaz – who is often the target of criticism – for seeming misinformed which is unfitting for someone who is leading the campaign for Pakistan’s ruling party.

Punjab by-polls

Currently, all eyes are on the Punjab polls which are scheduled to be held on the 17th of July. The stage is set for PTI and PML-N who will compete for governance in Punjab.

The polls are scheduled on 20 seats of the Punjab Assembly where PTI had won in the 2018 general elections and its MPAs had later defected to the PML-N and faced disqualification.

According to the latest development, PTI has bagged five more seats in the Punjab Assembly after the ECP issued notifications of reserved seats, giving the party an edge over its rival, the PML-N.

Both the parties are busy with intense campaigning ahead of the polls. PML-N is using its position in the government to announce relief packages. For instance, Punjab Chief Minister Hamza Shehbaz earlier announced a relief package where the provincial government would bear the power cost of households consuming up to 100 units of electricity in a month. His move forced the Election Commission of Pakistan to issue a notice for violating the code of conduct.
