Christians assaulted for sharing their faith in Eastern Uganda

A preacher and over 20 Christians were assaulted by hardline Muslims who objected to the preacher's teachings

In a poignant reminder of the challenges faced by religious minorities around the world, an open-air evangelistic event in eastern Uganda took a violent turn. A preacher and over 20 Christians were assaulted by hardline Muslims who objected to the preacher’s teachings about the divinity of Christ. The incident sheds light on the ongoing struggles for religious freedom and tolerance in the region.

Message of Peace Amidst Chaos

The event, organized by an undisclosed church, was intended to be a five-day gathering celebrating faith and spirituality. Robert Faisali Miya, a former Muslim who had converted to Christianity in 2010, took the stage to share his insights. Miya, a 34-year-old father of four, aimed to highlight the commonalities between Islam and Christianity, referencing passages from the Quran that acknowledged the uniqueness of Christ.

Clash of Ideologies

However, Miya’s message of unity and shared beliefs soon faced opposition from a group of hardline Muslims. Chanting the jihadist slogan “Allah Akbar,” they attempted to drown out his words. One of the leaders, Hiisa Mubaraka, known for his extreme views, rushed to the podium and physically assaulted the preacher, ultimately pulling him down.

Violence Erupts

As tension escalated, violence erupted. The situation turned chaotic as some Muslims sprayed what appeared to be acid, while others attacked Miya with thorny objects and stomped on him. Mubaraka’s fervent declaration that “infidels” should not be allowed to influence local Muslims fueled the aggression. The scene turned even more distressing when he encouraged the destruction of church properties.

Resilience and Unity

Amid the turmoil, Christian attendees bravely attempted to rescue Miya from the assault. They too faced the wrath of the attackers, suffering injuries as they were beaten with walking sticks. Despite the onslaught, the Christians displayed remarkable resilience and unity, managing to overpower the assailants. The Muslims retreated to a nearby mosque as the event organizers rushed Miya to a nearby clinic for medical attention.

Message Endures

Miya, although recovering at home and still in pain, remained resolute. He expressed that the suffering endured during the event was worth the opportunity to share the Gospel. More than 20 Christians sustained injuries during the altercation, demonstrating their unwavering commitment to their faith. Miya, who had left Islam to embrace Christianity over a decade ago, believed that despite the confrontation, the Muslims had heard the message of Christ.

Upholding Freedom of Faith

The incident in Uganda serves as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by religious minorities in the pursuit of practicing their faith freely. Despite Uganda’s constitution and legal provisions for religious freedom, incidents like these underscore the need for continued efforts to promote tolerance and understanding among different faith communities.
