Hindutva groups kill Muslim in brutal attack

News Analysis |

In a brutal attack, a Muslim man was allegedly attacked and killed by seven youths belonging to the Sangh Parivar. This comes after a Hindu activist named Deepak Rao was hacked to death on January 3rd. His death highlights the threat posed to Indian Muslims by Hindutva terrorists

The victim has been identified as 47-year-old Ahmed Bashir. Bashir was shifted to a private hospital in a serious condition but succumbed to his injuries on Sunday. His assailants who were caught after a surveillance camera caught the dastardly act, confessed to the police that they wanted to take revenge for Deepak Rao’s death.

The police had said that the dispute started over seats, and the man who argued with Junaid came back to the train with a mob from his village.

TR Suresh, Mangaluru Police Commissioner, identified the accused as 25-year-old Shrijith PK and 21-year-old Sandesh Kotyan of Uppala and Kasaragod district. Also, the brothers – 22-year-old Dhanush Poojary and 21-year-old Kishan Poojary of Padil, Mangaluru.

The four decided to avenge Rao’s death by targetting a person from the minority community. Unfortunately, it was Bashir who fell victim to their insanity. The news of Bashir’s death spread like wildfire. Crowds assembled outside Mangaluru’s AJ Hospital mortuary. His mortal remains were handed over to his family members after his autopsy. However, the last rites have been delayed since his brother Isrhan is yet to arrive from Abu Dhabi. Minister UT Khader, immediately rushed to the hospital upon hearing the news.

Meanwhile, the state government has announced a compensation of Rs. 10 lakhs to the bereaved family. CM Siddarmaiah who is in the district to inaugurate various development projects said that nobody should play politics over deaths, hinting at the BJP and other Sangh groups.

The victim was found dead on the Railway lines between Ramgarh and Jadoli Ka Bas on November 10th. Although the police are still awaiting the post-mortem reports, the case looks like a shoot-out and eventual decapitation.

“To maintain and restore peace, all must work together. Don’t rub salt into the wound. People in the coastal part are educated and such things should not happen in these places. They should stop killing innocent people and politicising the issue,” he said.

Siddaramiah also added that people who kill others lack humanity and respect for life in general.  The recent killing is the latest in a long line of a campaign of murder and death wreaked upon the hapless Indian Muslim community by saffron terrorists.

In November, three Muslim clerics were attacked by a group of men with sharp objects aboard a train in India’s Uttar Pradesh province. This latest attack only heightens fears for the minority community that already feels under siege since the rise to power by Hindutva fundamentalist Narendara Modi.

In June, 16-year-old Junaid Khan died and his cousins were wounded after an assault on a train near Delhi by a mob of 20 that shouted abuse and called them “anti-nationals” and “beef-eaters”.

In December 2017, a Muslim man was burnt alive in Rajasthan by Hindutva extremists for being in a relationship with a Hindu girl. The fanatics also made a video of the barbaric act and uploaded it on social media. The crime was committed allegedly in the name of ‘Love Jihad’. Police has identified the man as Muhammad Afzal who is the resident of West Bengal. According to Indian media, the main suspect of the heinous crime has been detained. The murderer, a man who has now been identified as one Shambhu Lal Regar, a resident of Rajsamand has been taken into custody.

With the rise of the Hindutva fundamentalist BJP to power in 2014, Hindutva militants have become prominent in most parts of India. These brutal militants have enacted savage murders of mainly Muslims on various reasons such as “Gau Raksha” (Cow protection) and “Love Jihad”.
