“She is hereby authorized to re-organize the party at all functional tiers/levels as “Chief Organizer,” the notification further added.

Maryam Nawaz previously served as the Vice President of PML-N. In 2019, when she was made the Vice President, PML-N’s political rival PTI challenged the appointment. PTI submitted an application to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) challenging PML-N’s decision to appoint Maryam Nawaz Sharif as one of the party’s 16 vice presidents.

According to the PTI’s application, filed by Farrukh Habib, Maleeka Bukhari, Kanwal Shauzab, and Javeria Zafar at the ECP, the appointment of Maryam as PML-N’s vice president was contrary to the Constitution. PTI said any party position to Maryam Nawaz is a violation of Article 62 and Article 63 of the Constitution as she is a convict.

In 2019, Maryam Nawaz was facing corruption charges in the Avenfield reference. However, in September 2022, the Islamabad High Court (IHC) acquitted Maryam Nawaz Sharif and her husband Captain (retd) Safdar in the case. As per IHC, no document had been presented so far that could be linked to the properties of Maryam and her father Nawaz Sharif.

In 2018, NAB ousted Nawaz Sharif for owning properties beyond his known income and for one year for not cooperating with NAB. Maryam Nawaz on the other hand was given seven years for abetment.
