Maryam Nawaz slams government, ignores some hard facts

Maryam Nawaz, daughter of ousted Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and vice-President of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), slammed Prime Minster Imran Khan and his team on Wednesday.

News Analysis |

Maryam Nawaz alleged that the Prime Minister has always been relying on others to run his house, therefore, he has no idea of how a family of an underprivileged background is like. “A man who has never worked hard in life cannot understand how Roti (flatbread) is cooked in the home of a hard-working laborer”, stated Maryam.

The PML-N vice-President was in Narowal on the instructions of her father to meet the 18-year old Zaki-ur-Rehman, a party worker suffering from thalassemia, an inherited condition which produce either no or too little hemoglobin, used by red blood cells to carry oxygen around the body.

PM Khan has announced the formation of the commission and now it is to be seen how does the commission operate and bring the looted money back to Pakistan.

While lashing out at Prime Minister Imran Khan she argued that he does not have the capacity to give National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO) to anyone. PM Khan and his ministers have hinted more than once that the former ruling party approached them to get an NRO. Prominent journalist Hamid Mir said in a TV talk-show that a member of Sharif family contacted the prime minister and requested him to ‘let go things’.

Hamid Mir also clarified that the PM may have WhatsApp record of the conversation. Sources confirm that PML-N has been trying to seek a deal with the incumbent government and some members from the treasury benches were also ready to give a clean chit to former PM Nawaz Sharif and his aides. However, the Prime Minster has made it clear that “I can sacrifice my life but will not spare these corrupt leaders who have looted the money of taxpayers”.

Maryam Nawaz further said that PM Imran Khan would himself seek NRO after a few days. She claimed that the world was recognizing Pakistan’s efforts during the PML-N supreme’s tenure but the rapidly developing country would start a downward trend soon after the 2018 general elections. Maryam also said the incumbent government is responsible for the current economic crisis and high inflation the people of Pakistan are facing.

It is worth noting that the moment PTI came to power, they made it public that the country is facing its worst economic crisis. Initially, Asad Umer, then finance minister and PTI’s prominent leader, decided not to approach the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for a bailout package. Allies like Saudi Arabia, UAE and China were approached to facilitate Pakistan. Finally, Pakistan went to IMF and sought out an economic deal.

Independent analysts and commentators believe that the present government had no choice except to increase taxes and seek help from friendly countries since there was nothing left by the former ruling parties PPP and PML-N. Therefore, the current economic crisis which has toughened the lives of ordinary people largely belongs to the PPP and PML-N.

Moreover, people reacted strongly to the speech of the PML-N leader and told her not to exaggerate the situation. For many, Maryam Nawaz was afraid of Prime Minister’s recent announcement of forming a high-level commission to probe into the last 10 years of the government.
