Movie Review: 7 Din Mohabbat In

News Desk |

With her debut feature becoming one of the biggest Bollywood box office hits of all time and her Pakistani TV dramas being a hit in Pakistan and overseas, Mahira Khan has proven herself to be one of Asia’s biggest stars. Her next role is in one of the year’s most anticipated films: 7 Din Mohabbat In.

The romantic comedy by the directing duo Meenu-Farjad will impact theaters this Eid-ul-Fitr, and will boast the star power of Sheheryar Munawar, Mahira Khan, Jawaid Sheikh, Amna Ilyas, Ayesha Omar, Mira Sethi and Hina Dilpazeer. The movie revolves around a young man who is told by a genie like djinn that he will be made more macho if he manages to get a girl to fall in love with him in seven days. He is assisted in his quest by Mahira Khan’s character who acts as his love guru but as the trailers seem to show, sparks will fly between the two.

On first glance, the film seems like your run of the mill slapstick comedy with the guy having his pick of the women around him. Interestingly though, the trailer effectively manages to make even the possible love interests (Amna Ilyas’s Princess Sonu and Mira Sethi’s Ghazala) seem more than supporting characters by giving them vibrant personalities. Mahira Khan’s Neeli in particular comes across as bubbly yet fierce. Sethi’s role as a “British Born Confused Desi” girl also seems like a blast. There’s also Amna Ilyas who is shown as an uber feminista and seems like a total firecracker. Hina Dilapzeer also seems to be playing a larger than life character.

Fascinatingly, it’s the lead male character that seems like the weakest especially compared to all the strong women around him. Sheheryar Munawar’s character Tipu is established as a “loser” in the film and even his objective seems more about wanting to be more masculine in general than anything else, which is a stark contrast from the strong silent male heroes we’re used to. Jawaid Shaikh’s character is perhaps the most interesting, and it will be of interest to see how fun his djinn turns out to be.

Considering Mahira Khan’s previous roles have all been relatively dark and dramatic, this departure from the norm is something her fans will no doubt be excited about. The lighthearted rom-com will most likely do Box Office business in the vein of recent Pakistani comedies like Wrong No. and Karachi Se Lahore. Of course, if the reviews and word of mouth are positive and Mahira Khan and Sheheryar Munawar’s “It” factor is strong enough, the film could breakout at the Box Office.

7 Din Mohabbat In is already being billed as the ‘Romantic Comedy of 2018’ in its trailer but time will tell just how well the movie, with its crazy blend of romance, comedy and the supernatural, resonates with the audiences.
