Pakistan Urges Restraint Amid Escalating Tensions with Afghanistan

Amid escalating tensions, Pakistan emphasizes dialogue and cooperation while conducting anti-terrorist operations in response to cross-border terrorism, urging Afghanistan to rein in militant groups to prevent further escalation and promote regional peace.

In response to heightened tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif emphasized Pakistan’s reluctance towards armed conflict, citing it as a last resort.

Asif’s remarks follow recent intelligence-based anti-terrorist operations conducted by Pakistan in Afghanistan’s border regions, aimed at curtailing cross-border terrorism. Despite retaliatory airstrikes by Afghan forces, Pakistan has reiterated its commitment to dialogue and cooperation to address the shared threat of terrorism.

Amidst escalating rhetoric, Asif highlighted Pakistan’s concerns regarding the proliferation of terrorist sanctuaries in Afghanistan and called for decisive action from the Afghan government to rein in groups targeting Pakistan. The recent surge in violence, including attacks by the Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), has strained bilateral relations, prompting Pakistan to issue a stern warning against harboring anti-Pakistan elements.

As tensions persist, Afghanistan’s interim government has condemned Pakistan’s airstrikes, alleging civilian casualties. However, Pakistan maintains that its actions were aimed at terrorist hideouts and not directed at the Afghan populace. Both countries have underscored the importance of safeguarding bilateral ties while confronting terrorism collectively.

Meanwhile, Pakistan faces a resurgent wave of terrorism, particularly in provinces like KP and Balochistan. Recent attacks on security personnel and infrastructure underscore the urgent need for coordinated efforts to address the root causes of extremism and violence. Despite challenges, Pakistan remains committed to regional stability and peace, urging Afghanistan to fulfill its obligations in combating terrorism.

As the situation unfolds, diplomatic channels remain open for dialogue and engagement, emphasizing the importance of mutual respect and cooperation in addressing shared security concerns. With both countries grappling with the menace of terrorism, a concerted effort is imperative to prevent further escalation and promote peace in the region.
