Pakistan’s resilient Christians: Kamran Michael

Kamran Michael Kamran Michael is a prominent Pakistani-Christian politician. He is currently serving as the Minister of the Statistics (elected in 2017) and has recently been re-elected as the member of Senate (2018 senate elections) on the minorities seat. Previously, Kamran has served as the Minister for Human Rights from 2013 to 2017 and Minister for Ports and Shipping from 2013 to 2016. In 2010, he was appointed as the provincial minister of Punjab for Finance. Kamran is a member of Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz Group PML (N).

Michael started his political career in 2001 after getting elected as Councillor. Later on, Michael was elected as a member of Provincial Assembly of Punjab on minorities seat in 2002 and 2008. Belonging to a political family, he has held several positions in the government; as provincial minister of Punjab for Human Rights, provincial minister for Minority A airs, provincial minister for Social Welfare and provincial minister for Women development in the Punjab cabinet.

Kam- ran’s father M.L Michael was a prominent Christian political leader; famously known for advocating equal human rights for Christians. In 2012, after the assassination of Shahbaz Bhatti, the first Federal Minister for Minorities A airs, Kam- ran Michael was elected as a member of the Senate of Paki- stan on a minority seat.

As the Federal Minister of Human Rights, Michael represented Pakistan at the United Nations in 2017. During his visit to the UN, Michael showed his commitment towards ensuring the promotion and protection of Human Rights particularly the rights of women, children and minorities. He stated Constitution of Pakistan guarantees the protection human rights for all, “we at Ministry of Human Rights ensures it implementations as it is our national obligation”.

Michael played a prominent role in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Protection of Communal Properties of Minority Community Act, 2014. Michael has also worked towards minorities marriages act which is considered to be one of his greatest achievements; Hindu Marriage Act, 2016, Christian Marriage and Divorce (Amendment) Bill, 2016, Sindh Hindu Marriage Acts, 2016.
