Parvez Elahi challenges Punjab Governor’s denotification order in LHC

Parvez Elahi has appealed that the Punjab Governor did not fulfill the constitutional requirement and ordered a vote of confidence during the ongoing session of the Punjab Assembly.

In a major development, Chaudhry Parvez Elahi on Friday moved Lahore High Court (LHC) against Punjab Governor Baligh-ur-Rehman for denotifying him as Punjab’s chief minister.

According to the details, Parvez Elahi filed a petition in which he appealed to the court to declare the governor’s move illegal. He argued that the Punjab Governor did not fulfill the constitutional requirement and ordered a vote of confidence during the ongoing session of the Punjab Assembly.

Moreover, Parvez Elahi said in the petition that the governor did not authorize to summon assembly session when the current session was already underway.

“No action can be taken against any chief minister over speaker’s actions,” maintains the petition. Governor Rehman has been made respondent in the case via his principal secretary and chief secretary of the province.

Pertinent to mention that PTI and PML-Q had already announced their intention to approach the court over the governor’s move.

“I reject the de-notification. I am the Chief Minister of Punjab and the cabinet will continue to function,” Chaudhry Parvez Elahi said while talking to the media.

Punjab governor denotifies Parvez Elahi as CM

Late Thursday, Punjab Governor Baligh-ur-Rehman denotified Chief Minister Parvez Elahi for not seeking the vote of confidence despite his advice.

The Punjab governor shared the order on Twitter and said since CM Pervaiz Elahi has refrained from obtaining the Vote of Confidence at the appointed day and time therefore he ceases to hold office.

“Since CM has refrained from obtaining vote of confidence at the appointed day and time therefore he ceases to hold office. Orders issued this evening,” Baligh ur Rehman wrote on his Twitter handle, sharing a copy of the notification.

Meanwhile, PTI leader Fawad Chaudhry announced shortly after that a reference will be sent against the governor to President Dr Arif Alvi as part of proceedings to remove him from his office.
