Philippines has been put on alert by China

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi cautioned the Philippines about potential repercussions in their escalating South China Sea dispute, emphasizing the need for dialogue to address “serious difficulties” between the two nations. Accusations have intensified in recent months, with both countries alleging provocative actions. China accused the Philippines of trespassing, while the Philippines claimed that a Chinese vessel rammed a ship carrying its armed forces chief.

Wang, in a call with Philippines counterpart Enrique Manalo, stated that China-Philippines relations are at a critical juncture. He warned that if the Philippines misjudges the situation or collaborates with external forces with ill intentions, China would vigorously defend its rights. While the statement did not specify the potential actions, it underscores the gravity of the situation.

A dispute from a long time

The ongoing dispute involves the Philippines resisting perceived attempts by China to restrict access to fossil fuel and fisheries resources in its exclusive economic zone (EEZ). Although armed confrontation escalation seems unlikely, it would significantly heighten tensions, especially considering the 1951 treaty binding the United States to defend the Philippines in case of an attack, including in the South China Sea.

Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr, addressing troops, reaffirmed the country’s commitment to strengthening its armed forces and existing alliances. He expressed concern over the recent incident involving the armed forces chief, emphasizing the Philippines’ crucial role in regional security amid geopolitical tensions.

China’s expansive claims in the South China Sea, represented by the disputed nine-dash line, overlap with the EEZs of several neighboring countries. the US has been in active discussions with China over the South China Sea, while continuously engaging with regional power to support their claims. Despite an international tribunal invalidating China’s claim in 2016, Beijing has maintained a robust coast guard presence, including around militarized artificial islands equipped with missile systems.
