PM Khan to inaugurate world’s largest Miyawaki forest in Lahore

Prime Minister Imran Khan will inaugurate the world’s largest Miyawaki urban forest in Lahore. The project expands over 100 kanals having a total of 165,000 plants that are said to go ten times faster. This forest has been termed “ the lungs” of Lahore.

State Minister for Information and Broadcasting Farrukh Habib announced that Prime Minister Imran Khan will inaugurate the largest Miyawaki forest today. This project is part of the monsoon drive under the 10 Billion Tree Tsunami project. Planting Miyawaki forests requires specialized tillage and a myriad of native varieties with different growth rates to produce fast-growing urban forests.

An additional 53 Miyawaki forests are being planted in other parts of Lahore, to create carbon sinks and better combat pollution in the city. This project has been geo-tagged for accurate monitoring and development.

The Miyawaki forest technique is the brainchild of the Japanese botanist Akira Miyawaki that allows people to establish man-made forests in urban settings. This technique is said to produce growth thirty times more than normal plantation activities.

Urban greening is a groundbreaking approach to mitigate the negative impacts of climate change. The Miyawaki technique has been successful in 38 countries to replenish forests with local species.  Once the forest is planted, it requires three years of monitoring and thereafter it self perpetuates.

Prime Minister (PM) Khan has been leading the charge on climate action. In June PM Khan stated that “Pakistan is among the 10 most vulnerable countries with regards to global warming.” He has been emphasizing to take heed to the green cause for the survival of the nation. This year the Spring Tree plantation was launched to plant ten billion trees.

The PM addressed on several occasions the need for the developed world to formulate policies that help developing countries like Pakistan to sustain their economy through a green approach. The inauguration of the Miyawaki urban forest in Lahore is a milestone for Pakistan’s efforts against global warming. By 2023, Pakistan’s government has made plans to restore over 1 million hectares of forest and increase employment through these projects.
