PTA, TikTok discuss content moderation in virtual meeting

On Monday, senior management of TikTok held a virtual meeting with Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) and discussed the future strategy to improve the content in line with the local laws.

The PTA issued a statement on Tuesday and said that TikTok held an exhaustive virtual meeting with the authority in a bid to moderate the unlawful content in accordance with the laws of Pakistan.

China-based social media application, TikTok, informed PTA the measures they have taken to improve content moderation in line with the local laws.

The PTA Chairman urged the management to make efforts within a tangible timeline. He also appreciated the efforts of TikTok in this regard. Moreover, PTA and TikTok have agreed to reach a mutual agreement to ensure a safe internet experience for users in Pakistan.

Last week, (PTA) had blocked TikTok in the country. The authority cited the failure of the social media app to follow the instructions on the “development of an effective mechanism for proactive moderation of unlawful online content”.

PTA added that it took action as they have received numerous complaints from people over indecent and immoral content shared on the social media app.
