Ranbir Kapoor flawlessly plays Sanjay Dutt in biopic ‘Sanju’

News Desk |

The first teaser of biopic movie ‘Sanju’ inspired by the life of a veteran Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt starring Ranbir Kapoor in lead role has been released. From teenage to date, Ranbir Kapoor has flawlessly essayed different avatars of Sanjay Dutt in the movie.

The critics and viewers are overwhelmed with the striking resemblance of Ranbir Kapoor with Sanjay Dutt. The one-and-a-half minute teaser has garnered 16 million views on YouTube in less than 24 hours. The movie was in making for a year and had its release date extended several times before eventually getting its date for screening on June 29th, 2018.

The director of the film and close friend of Sanjay Dutt Rajkumar Hirani said the viewers will witness both the brighter and darker aspects of his life from drug addictions to imprisonment and multiple marriages.

Rajkumar Hirani in a press conference said, Sanju is a biopic and not an ad film. The director pointed out how filmmakers manipulate with their freedom of fictionalizing certain aspects of the subject’s life in the movie for commercial purposes. They say ‘Sanju’ is void of any fictional manipulation and is rather based on facts shared by Sanjay Dutt about his life.

Director Hirani and Abhijat Joshi stated they have added drama element to the movie and have compressed a few characters into one person to limit the runtime of the film.

“I don’t think we have added fiction but sometimes you do need to dramatize something or make a funny scene funnier. We just hear a situation. We don’t know what dialogues were exchanged between people. But the effort has been to make the whole film on facts. There is dramatization and things like that,” said the director.

He also appreciated Sanjay Dutt for opening up about his life stories and downfalls without any hesitation.

“Sanju is a brave guy. I don’t think there’s any other actor who can open up about his life like he did and say, ‘Go, make the film.’ Sanju has been courageous. He hasn’t seen the whole film till now. I keep telling him to watch it, but he insists he would watch it upon its release. So, there was never that pressure of projecting someone. This is not an ad film.”

The film also has Anushka Sharma, Sonam Kapoor, Paresh Rawal and Manisha Koraila in supporting cast.

Ranbir Kapoor added he was not prepared to take on the role of his icon Sanjay Dutt. He said, not even for once he took this opportunity to showcase his acting skills, but like a once in a lifetime opportunity to be Sanjay Dutt.

“I have always been a Sanjay Dutt fan. So, for me, it was a fan trying to play his icon on the screen. So, I think the hardest thing that I had to do was to give myself confidence that I could play this role. When Raju sir told me about it, I just didn’t have the confidence because I felt I won’t be able to do it. I don’t have the courage and the understanding. I don’t have the acting chops to do it.”

“So, this is not an acting gig for me. I don’t think I have tried to showcase my talent. For me, it was just an opportunity to be a part of the story of someone, whom I consider my icon. He is flawed but a very good person, Ranbir Kapoor said to media.
