Reduction in petroleum prices: public relief or a tactic?

Fuel consumers might have a relief of Rs41 per liter in the price of diesel and Rs17.21 per liter in petrol

So far, we have witnessed an increasing trend in petrol prices, a total of four oil price shocks since the new government came into power in order to fulfill the IMF conditions. In a major development, fuel consumers might have a relief of Rs41 per liter in the price of diesel and Rs17.21 per liter in petrol following the reduction in oil prices in international market.

On Wednesday, Finance Minister Miftah Ismail said that the summary to reduce petroleum prices had been sent to Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif for further action.

While talking to a private television channel, Miftah added that the prices of petroleum products would be decreased on the mandates of the premier to provide assistance to the people.

Miftah continued to claim that the prime minister sincerely wanted to pass on the benefits of low petroleum prices in the international market to the people at earliest.

Former Prime Minister Imran Khan also expressed his concerns regarding drop in international prices on internet. “With the big drop in international prices the Imported govt must pass on the full benefit of the price reduction to the people who have been crushed by the unprecedented inflation unleashed by this cabal of crooks brought to power through US regime change conspiracy,” he said.

However, netizens are taking this sincerity by the government towards people to another level.

It has been highlighted by a Twitter user that we are still paying 56 percent higher price for petrol and 64 percent higher diesel price than we used to pay during PTI regime. “This is even after big reduction in global crude oil,” he added.

Moreover, netizens are also making fun of this initiative and considering it as a “tactic” to win support in upcoming elections on 17th July.

It has also been anticipated by the people that this reduction is only for short span of time which would be reversed after the elections. Also, rapid inflation in the country has caused serious disappointment among the people that they are lacking trust in the government.
