Social media sites and YouTube blocked: Is the Internet next?

The chaos in the capital is at its peak where the police’s clash with protestors of the Islamabad sit-in continues. 5 hours into the military operation, PEMRA blocked all private TV news channels because they were covering the issue.

In a more recent development, the government has blocked access to social media websites Facebook and Twitter. YouTube has also been blocked so people in Pakistan have no way of live streaming the events of police action against the protestors.

After the news channels were blocked off, the public was obviously going to turn to social media for news but now that too has been blocked.

This level of media censorship is something that is expected from a full-scale dictatorship, not a “democracy” that the current government claims to be.
