Stranger things becomes Netflix most watched show with 1 billion viewing hours

Stranger Things has notched up another record for Netflix, becoming the most-viewed streaming series ever over a single week in the US, according to figures from data firm Nielsen.

The most-watched English-language Netflix series is the science fiction drama starring Winona Ryder and Millie Bobby Brown. Only one other Netflix program, the South Korean drama Squid Game, has surpassed 1 billion viewing hours.

Stranger Things also hit No.1 on Netflix’s Top 10 lists in 91 countries, a first for an English-language TV series, the company said.

Stranger Things also smashed the Nielsen streaming record for most-watched programs in a week shortly after the final episodes aired. Between May 30 and June 5, when Season 4 volume 1 of the program was released, 7.2 billion minutes of the program were watched. It quickly took the top spot on the leaderboard.

With the publication of the final two episodes last week, the show’s fourth season came to an end. As viewers rushed to see it, the Netflix app briefly crashed.

Along with breaking numerous milestones, the most recent season also propelled Kate Bush’s 1985 song “Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God)” to the top of the charts 37 years after it was first released. In the most recent season of the show, the song has gained a new audience among a younger age.

The sci-fi drama, set in the 1980s, debuted in 2016 showing supernatural horror emerging from the Upside Down, an alternate dimension and besetting the fictional Indiana town of Hawkins.
