Telefilm on Zainab rape case to air soon

News Analysis |

Zainab Ansari was raped and murdered earlier this year in January. The horrific incident took place in Kasur, Punjab, Pakistan, which was also a flashpoint for child pornography. In regard to this, the case went on to receive international attention.

Recently, a private TV channel has announced to produce a telefilm on the tragic rape case of the eight-year-old. According to the reports, Suhail Sameer will play the rapist, Imran, and Hamna Amir is expected to play Zainab. The drama serial also stars Irfan Khoosat and Saba Faisal.

The telefilm that is currently under-production is titled ‘Zainab Ke Qatil’. The famous novelist, Umera Ahmed has written the dialogues for the telefilm. She also wrote the dialogues of the highly popular drama serial ‘Baaghi’ that was based on the life of the slain internet sensation, Qandeel Baloch.

The telefilm will depict the exact series of events that led to the young girl’s murder. It will also aim to highlight the society’s negligence. The sources added that the telefilm will teach parents how to protect their children from pedophiles, which is very much needed after recent events.

The horrific rape case of Zainab has garnered further national and international media attention since it was first reported in February. The international outcry pressed the authorities to bring the culprits to justice as soon as possible. The entire country including politicians, entertainers, civilians, and intellectuals expressed their solidarity with the victim’s family.

With this in mind, the viewers expect the telefilm makers to respect the sensitivity of the issue. They also wish the drama serial to purely serve its purpose of awareness instead of ratings and TRP. Previously, a drama serial ‘Udaari’ featuring Urwa Hocane, Ahsan Khan and Farhan Khan too raised the issue of child abuse.

These days politics has subsided the brewing issue of child protection that requires immediate action. It is hoped the given drama serial will revive the forgotten debate of child protection and the role of authorities in its control.

Lastly, it is anticipated that the telefilm will urge the authorities to pace up other pending cases of child abuse including the speedy investigation of the biggest child abuse scandal reported in 2015 in Kasur.
