Thugs of Hindostan flops: Was Amir Khan punished for not bowing to ‘hidden powers’

News Desk |

Arguably the biggest dud (and the worst film) of 2018 was the Aamir Khan-Amitabh Bachchan starrer Thugs of Hindostan. Directed by Dhoom 3’s Vijay Krishna Acharya, the most expensive Bollywood film ever, with a budget of 3 billion Indian rupees, opened modestly at the box office and has failed to connect with the audiences.

Audiences excited at the prospect of seeing Khan and Bachchan on screen for the first time were let down by the film’s generic storyline and annoying characters. Adding insult to the injury was the fact that even Katrina Kaif’s small role couldn’t help sell the film to audiences. Critics have also been decidedly harsh (and rightfully so), with the film resting at 18% on Rotten Tomatoes.

With all of that in mind, lead actor Aamir Khan has generously decided to step up and take full responsibility for inflicting audiences with the pain of seeing the mediocre movie.

“I think we went wrong and I would like to take full responsibility for that. We tried very hard to make a good film and we didn’t hold back from putting in our entire effort, but somewhere or the other we went wrong. There are people who have liked the film and we are thankful to them, but they are in a minority.

Most people didn’t like our film — we are aware of that. I want to apologize to my audience also as this time I wasn’t able to entertain them. I know people came in theatres with a lot of expectations but they didn’t enjoy the film,” the PK and Dhoom 3 star stated.

The video of him taking responsibility for the film has surfaced on a fan page and has been shared numerous times already.

He continued, saying “Audience is free to say what they feel about the film. What I can say is that we certainly tried our level best and I am feeling really bad that we didn’t succeed in entertaining the audience. So, next time we will try harder. I don’t feel comfortable to talk about all these things publicly because when I am doing a film, I feel really close to it. It is like our own child, so if the film hasn’t succeeded to leave its mark, even then it will remain like my child.”

While it is refreshingly sweet of him to take the responsibility for the films many flaws, one has to remember that his performance (along with Big B’s) was one of the only few things lauded by fans and critics in the movie. So him taking the fall not only showcases what a truly great artist he is but also highlights how much he values fans and their feedback. It’s no doubt that Khan, who is notorious for picking memorable roles will be more selective in his upcoming movies. This perhaps could be the reason why Aamir Khan has vacated the upcoming film Saare Jahan Se Accha’s lead role. The upcoming film will now be led by Shah Rukh Khan.
