Director General (DG) Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Major General Asif Ghafoor acknowledged the reality of US being a superpower and their role in geopolitics and stressed that if Pakistan had not played a positive role, US would not have been the only superpower in the world.

Commenting on Pakistan-US relationship, he argued that there is no halt in talks with the US. Nevertheless, US president Donald Trump’s tweet at the beginning of the year and his South Asian policy did affect the regional stability.

DG ISPR cautioned India over its covert operations to destabilize Pakistan and claimed that India should be thankful to Pakistan for its role in defeating Al Qaeda and other terrorist organization. “If Pakistan had not dismantled Al Qaeda, this threat would have reached India,” he said.

General Bajwa wants to take Pakistan on the path of peace and interpreting it in any other way is not commendable. He stressed upon the importance of coordination among the state institutions for the betterment of the country.

Despite Pakistan’s positive role in eliminating the hostile actors from the region, India is playing an active role in instability of the region which is not even in its own interest. While addressing a press conference in general headquarters Rawalpindi, DG ISPR said, General Bajwa’s desire is to make Pakistan peaceful country and to bring peace and security to the region.

Successful PSL Testimony to Improved Security

He praised Pakistan’s security forces including police, rangers and Pakistan army for playing a vital role in ensuring that key events including Pakistan Super League (PSL), and Pakistan day parade took place peacefully.

After the successful staging of PSL in Lahore and Karachi, there is no reason that Pakistan cannot arrange matches at another place. He said that “I have advised Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman, Mr. Najam Sethi, to organize the matches of the next edition of PSL in other cities- Faisalabad, Multan, and Peshawar.”

Identifying water, electricity, and communication as the rudimentary requirements of the province, DG showed commitment to bringing stability in the region using the intelligence-based operations to ensure peace and improved security.

Highlighting the improved security position in Karachi, DG said, there were 70 no-go areas, but now there is none. And political activities in the city are on the peak, hotel occupancy has reached 100%, KSE is performing better and social events are happening without fear.

Maj Ghafoor also praised all security agencies including ISI, Military Intelligence and Intelligence Bureau (IB) for their utmost efforts and sacrifices in improving the security apparatus in the country. “Twenty-six major operations, 23,318 IBOs, 7,738 check-posts and over 23,000 weapons were recovered as part of Raddul Fasaad,” he added.

CPEC challenge

Speaking of the challenges facing Pakistan, he argued that success of China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) will bring triumph for all regional countries along with Pakistan and China. There are certain elements which are attempting to sabotage the regional peace and can directly undermine Pakistan’s peace and economy.

Deployment of Pakistani forces in Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

Discussing the Pakistan-Saudi relationship, Major General Ghafoor said that General Bajwa went to Saudi Arabia and held talks with the authorities. Pakistan forces will go to Saud Arabia under a bilateral agreement between the two countries.

He confirmed that our forces are deployed in KSA for training purpose. Citing internal challenges, Saudis have demanded more troops for deployment under the 1992 bilateral security agreement. Pakistan has similar agreements with all other Gulf countries. Iran’s pilots have been training in Pakistan under the same agreement, he said.

DG ISPR Questioned the Misinformation

He also put to rest the speculations regarding Bajwa doctrine and demanded that ‘Bajwa doctrine should be seen with a security lens only’ and 18th amendment has nothing to do with Bajwa doctrine.

He blamed the anchorpersons who participated in the meeting between the COAS Qamar Javed Bajwa and TV anchorpersons. He accused journalists of manipulating, twisting and interpreting the words of the chief according to their own will and comprehension of the issue which created confusion in the certain sections of the media.

On the request of the media persons, off the record meeting was arranged to discuss the security situation of the country. “Army chief during the interaction spoke on same issues and raised concern over the security threats facing the country as I am discussing with you in my media talk,” DG ISPR asserted.

General Bajwa wants to take Pakistan on the path of peace and interpreting it in any other way is not commendable. He stressed upon the importance of coordination among the state institutions for the betterment of the country.

  1. The history of US – Pakistan relations is almost 6 to 7 decades old with a lot many ups and downs. The video released by USIS Department titled “US welcomes President Ayub Khan” covering the state visit to US by President Ayub Khan speaks a lot about the warmness and closeness of new found mutual relationship. During that period Pakistan was made a member of CENTO and SEATO defense treaties and thus got the needed weapons for its armed forces. It can be termed as a honey moon period between the two countries. After the 1965 war between India and Pakistan, the US-Pakistan relationship witnessed fading away of earlier warmness due to difference in perceptions about the interpretations of defense agreements. The Pakistanis view relationship with US to be dependent on US geopolitical needs and after fulfilling of the desired needs the much projected warmness becomes a tissue paper to be thrown in the dust bin.
There is a general feeling among the people of Pakistan that the US despite terming Pakistan an ally has left Pakistan in the lurch when its help was direly needed. They think that the history of terrorism in Pakistan is rooted when resistance was being built against Soviet Union upon its invasion of Afghanistan. At that time reportedly, the fighters from many a countries were gathered terming it as a Jihad against the occupation forces. What a double standard it is that when the people equipped with US weapons put up a resistance against Soviet Union they are the soldiers of Islam and termed Mujahideen and when they go against the US invasion they become terrorists. The history gives a clear lesson that to fight on Afghan soil and that also with the Afghan born fighters is a difficult task. The people who are born with a weapon in their hands and who possess a fighting spirit with the invaders in their blood cannot be forced upon to accept dictation of others. The fate of Soviet invasion and now the US occupation can be seen in this context.
In the press & media meeting address by the Director General (DG) Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), Major General Asif Ghafoor has very appropriately dwelt at length with exhaustive comments on many issues presently confronting Pakistan with particular elaboration on US – Pakistan relations and India’s role in undermining Pakistan. Pakistan has been fighting the War on Terror for the last many years. As a result of this war which many a Pakistanis strongly believe is not theirs rather imposed on them as a result of close geographical proximity with Afghanistan. Some also believe that it is just like the Vietnam war which was then stretched over the Kampuchea (Cambodia). This war from Pakistani perspective has cost us economically, politically and hit our social fabric ominously. We were subjected to hundreds of bomb blasts and suicidal bombings killing thousands of civilians besides economic losses. The hard hitting in the tribal belt through Drones had a two pronged impact. Besides killing the Al-Qaeda or Taliban fighters, many other innocent people including women and children also got killed. This in turn created hatred for Pakistanis then siding with the US.
At a time when this nation was heading towards breaking of hearts position with regard to the very existence of their country, the brave armed forces carried out Zarb e Azab mission for elimination of the Kharjis and thousands of soldiers sacrificed their lives. Despite all this, we are being constantly reminded of Do More. Isn’t this enough of a chain of losses and sacrifices which the Pakistanis have so far offered. We are often charged of using terrorism as a state policy but gathering of hard facts on the subject issue reveals a different story. Besides others the tacit role of our eastern neighbor bespeaks volumes of harboring terrorist activities in neighboring countries and Pakistan being the major target. The news that a particular group of fighers is being reorganized in Afghanistan after completing their role in Syria is a cause of worry for many countries including Pakistan, Iran, Russia and China. The recent action at FATF meeting in UN putting Pakistan on the Watch List and other intimidation measures can in no way be termed as actions from a friendly country.
The US policy on Pakistan needs revisit by the US officials of American origin and not to be dictated by those who have new found honey moon relationship and whose main objective since inception is destruction of Pakistan. The US policy on Pakistan needs revamping and communicated through channels other than Twitter. For this a meaningful dialogue is the best way for ushering in a new confidence between the two old friendly countries rather than initiating a blame game for a reckless adventure in Afghanistan and measures of intimidation as a retaliatory move for maintaining of strong relationship with a particular country. The effort should aim on exploring of basis and grounds for cooperation as well as reappraisal of wrongs and injustices for building a tower of Friendship taking care of mutual respect and honor, respect for integrity and safeguarding of geographical frontiers.
