WhatsApp ends support for older phones

WhatsApp drops support for iPhone 5s, 6, and 6 Plus—users must upgrade to iOS 15.1 or newer to keep messaging.

From May 5, 2025, WhatsApp users with older iPhones will be locked out of the app as Meta pulls support for devices running iOS versions below 15.1. The decision affects iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus — devices that can no longer be updated to newer operating systems — effectively cutting off access to all WhatsApp features including sending and receiving messages.

Why Support Is Being Discontinued

WhatsApp, owned by Meta, says the move is part of its annual review of supported devices. According to a spokesperson, “Every year we look at which devices and software are the oldest and have the fewest users. These devices also might not have the latest security updates, or might lack the functionality required to run WhatsApp.”

The primary reason cited is security. Older operating systems lack the critical updates needed to protect users from emerging vulnerabilities. WhatsApp has made it clear that only iPhones running iOS 15.1 or later will continue to be supported.

Affected Devices

The following iPhones are no longer compatible with WhatsApp as of May 5, 2025:

  • iPhone 5s
  • iPhone 6
  • iPhone 6 Plus

These devices, released between 2013 and 2014, were officially discontinued by Apple in 2016 and later listed as obsolete, meaning they no longer receive software or security updates from Apple, nor are they eligible for official servicing.

Even if users try to update their devices, iOS 15.1 is not available for these models. Users are left with only one option: upgrade to a newer iPhone that supports the minimum required software version.

How to Check Your iOS Version

To check whether your iPhone is compatible with WhatsApp’s latest requirements:

  1. Open the Settings app
  2. Go to General > About
  3. Look for the Version field to see which iOS is installed

To update your phone (if eligible):

  1. Go to Settings > General > Software Update
  2. If an update is available, tap Install Now

Users can also enable automatic updates for future-proofing.

Android Phones Affected Too

WhatsApp will also end support for certain Android phones on January 1, 2025. These include:

  • Samsung: Galaxy S3, Galaxy Note 2, Galaxy Ace 3, Galaxy S4 Mini
  • Motorola: Moto G (1st Gen), Razr HD, Moto E 2014
  • HTC: One X, One X+, Desire 500, Desire 601
  • LG: Optimus G, Nexus 4, G2 Mini, L90
  • Sony: Xperia Z, Xperia SP, Xperia T, Xperia V

These older Android devices, like their iPhone counterparts, are unable to run modern operating systems and thus fall below WhatsApp’s compatibility standards.

Growing Frustrations Over Recent Changes

This update comes on the heels of recent design changes to WhatsApp that have already annoyed many users. A new Meta AI shortcut button—a floating blue circle in the bottom-right of all chats—has sparked backlash, with users calling it “annoying” and “in the way.”

Additionally, WhatsApp recently altered the visual style of ‘online’ and ‘typing’ indicators, changing their first letters to uppercase — a seemingly minor tweak that nonetheless left some long-time users unhappy.
