Avengers: Endgame could be making history this week

News Desk |

The film has yet to lift its review embargo but the hype around the film is such that most opening weekend screenings around the world (including Pakistan) are already sold out. The Marvel tent pole is on track to possibly make a billion dollars in its opening weekend.

For comparison, Aquaman and Captain Marvel both ended their runs with a billion dollars at the worldwide box office so the fact that this Marvel movie is going to end up starting with that much is insane.

Industry analysts predict that the movie could very well open with $300 million in the US helping it break all previous US domestic box office records. Even more interesting is the fact that if the film fails to achieve a billion right out of the gate, it will still do a business of $1.5 billion in just 10 days. Suffice to say that Avengers: Endgame is proving to be an event unlike any other.

The Marvel brand has been successfully building up to this finale for the last nineteen years and fans are eager to know the fate of their favorite characters. Opening in 4600 theatres in US alone, the film is said to be having one of the widest opening stateside and given the figures around the world and the number of screenings Pakistani cinemas are giving the film, the overall box office gross of the film is going to be something spectacular.

In India, online retailer BookMyShow reports that it sold a million tickets in just one day in advance of the pic’s April 26 opening in the country in English, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu. That translated to 18 tickets sold a second. China too is said to pull in major business for Endgame and there is hope from Disney that the movie overperforms and hands them the biggest opening of the Middle Kingdom in all time.

In China as well as Pakistan the ticket prices for the film have been bumped by the film distributors as they realize the significance of what could undoubtedly become the highest grossing film of all time. The reason for this is that the Marvel and Avengers name have built a strong IP over the years, with each crossover pic doing more than a billion.

The film is also the sequel to last year’s Avengers: Infinity War which became the fastest film to ever cross $1 billion and then $1.5 billion. The film eventually ended up earning 2 billion overall behind Avatar, Titanic and Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Avengers: Infinity War put the life of some of the most beloved Marvel characters in jeopardy and there is some great excitement over who will survive this battle.

The film’s social media embargo also just lifted and the reactions from critics have been better than we could have hoped. All of this means that we will likely see many records being broken in the coming weeks. The movie releases in Pakistan on the 26th of April.
