Ayhodhya Verdict: Bollywood Support for Extremism is Unnerving

Some of the ecstatic Bollywood celebrities cheered Indian Supreme Court’s verdict in Ayudha Verdict. But were slammed on social media.

Several Bollywood celebrities received flak on social media for hailing the historic Ayhodhya verdict on the case of razing the Babri Mosque by BJP nationalists. The Indian Supreme Court on Saturday favored the Hindu nationalist when it gave the Hindu community the possession of the disputed land. A large group of Hindu-nationalist had razed the mosque to the ground in 1992. The ownership of the contentious land was claimed by both majority Hindus and Muslims.

They claimed the mosque was deliberately built on the land, which the birthplace of Hindu Lord Ram, and hence they rightfully deserve the possession of the land. The Indian Supreme Court on Saturday ruled that the disputed Babri Mosque land should be given to the Hindus while ordering the Muslims be allotted an alternate land as a replacement for the destroyed Babri Mosque.

Celebrities like Urmila Matondkar, Vivek Oberoi, Huma Qureshi, Kunal Kapoor, Shekhar Gupta, Javed Akhtar, Farhan Akhtar, Tapsee Pannu, Koena Mitra hailed the decision and declared it a triumph. Many of the celebrities joined the celebration which swept across India following the decision.

While Muslim celebrities expressed reverence for the apex court’s decision asked people to practice restraint and patience and maintain peace and unity. Some even attacked the western media calling them out for anticipating bloodshed and mass riots following the verdict. They, however, came under heavy dissension from their followers on social media.

Actor-turned-politician Kiron Kher and Anupam Kher, who have been staunchest critics of Pakistan, also hailed Indian SC decision. The appreciation and praises usually followed by BJP-sympathisers and loyalists, who are hyper-nationalistic and believe in Hindu supremacy.

Many sane voices in India including top Muslim leaders and clerics have strongly reacted to the decision. Several people have slammed the Supreme Court of India, calling it detrimental for secularism in India. They demanded the land to be handed over to the Muslims for the construction of the mosque.
