Markhor symbol on umbrella of Maryam Nawaz sparks commentary

PMLN Vice President Maryam Nawaz Sharif was seen carrying the umbrella with the insignia of Markhor on it. The video appeared on social media on Thursday and garnered the attention of social media users.

She was seen holding the black umbrella with a markhor insignia on it. Interesting to note, that Markhor is the national animal of Pakistan. Markhor is also known as the screwed-horn goat is the national animal of Pakistan because it is found in various regions across Pakistan. Markhor, known as the snake-eater goat, was also the symbol of Pakistan’s Intelligence Agency, ‘Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), commented a user.

Another user commented that Markhor is no longer the symbol of Pakistan’s ISI as it was changed to Shaheen/Eagle recently. Her video, however, garnered mixed responses on social media. “Maryam under the umbrella of the Markhor insignia is equivalent to placing the Holy Qur’an over the head at Rukhsatii in Pakistani Politics. Our’s to be General Rani are also in search of such umbrellas for debut in Balochistan Politics.” one tweet read.

Another Twitter user corrected people saying, “Markhor, is not the ISI logo anymore. The new insignia of ISI contains an Eagle/Shaheen, which was commissioned and installed as a logo for ISI during DG Faiz’s time.”

Social media users were speculative behind Maryam Nawaz holding the umbrella with Markhor insignia at a time when PMLN has been dethroned from the rule following the verdict of the Supreme Court regarding the election of Chief Minister in Punjab. Commenting on the ongoing political tussle between PMLN and PTI, a user said: “Honor the vote under the shadow of Markhor!”
