Philippines celebrates Islamic heritage in Riyadh for Ramadan

The upcoming event in Riyadh highlights the importance of promoting cultural exchange between the Philippines and Saudi Arabia.

In a testament to the rich diversity of the Philippines, the country is set to showcase its Islamic heritage at a special Ramadan event in Riyadh later this month. This event, organized by the Philippine Embassy in the Saudi capital, aims to highlight the vibrant Islamic culture that has been an integral part of the Philippine archipelago for centuries.

Filipino Muslim Community

Filipino Muslims, constituting around 10 percent of the country’s population, form the third-largest Muslim community in Southeast Asia. With roots dating back to 1380, when Islam first arrived in the predominantly Catholic Philippines, the Filipino Muslim community has played a significant role in shaping the country’s cultural landscape. Most Filipino Muslims reside in Mindanao, the Sulu archipelago, and Manila, contributing to the diverse tapestry of Philippine society.

Promoting Cultural Exchange

The upcoming event in Riyadh highlights the importance of promoting cultural exchange between the Philippines and Saudi Arabia. Through activities such as an iftar gathering and a Qur’an reading exhibition, the embassy seeks to foster mutual understanding and strengthen bonds of friendship between the two communities. This initiative not only celebrates the values of peace, compassion, and community exemplified during Ramadan but also showcases the rich Islamic tradition of the Philippines.

Supporting Overseas Filipino Workers

In addition to promoting cultural exchange, the event serves as a platform to support the overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in Saudi Arabia. With over 437,000 Filipino migrant workers in the Kingdom, according to the Philippine Statistics Authority, Saudi Arabia remains one of the most popular destinations for OFWs. The embassy’s commitment to supporting OFWs and their families is reflected in its various programs and initiatives, including this Ramadan event. By providing a space for connection and interaction between OFWs and the Saudi community, the embassy aims to address the needs and concerns of Filipino expatriates abroad.
