Netflix, the world’s leading entertainment service has signed a multi-year deal with the former President of the United States Barack Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama. The unique contract was announced on Monday.
Even though exclusive production partnerships are very common in Hollywood, especially since Netflix has been attracting a bunch of A-listers such as Ryan Murphy and Shonda Rhimes, this is a one-of-a- kind deal with a former U.S. President.
The Obamas have launched their own production company, Higher Ground Productions, which will produce content for Netflix – Possibly including scripted series, documentaries, and features.
“One of the simple joys of our time in public service was getting to meet so many fascinating people from all walks of life, and to help them share their experiences with a wider audience,” Obama said in the statement.

“That’s why Michelle and I are so excited to partner with Netflix. We hope to cultivate and curate the talented, inspiring and creative voices who are able to promote greater empathy and understanding between people, and help them share their stories with the entire world.”
“Barack and Michelle Obama are among the world’s most respected and highly-recognized public figures and are uniquely positioned to discover and highlight stories of people who make a difference in their communities and strive to change the world for the better,” said Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos.
Michelle Obama said they are focusing on “storytelling to inspire us, to make us think differently about the world around us, and to help us open our minds and hearts to others”.
The given statements have not given any details about the monetary agreements between Netflix and The Obamas. The couple is expected to reap huge profits from their Netflix venture as online entertainment service has its outreach in 190 countries with 125 million subscribers; additional to lucrative book deals signed by Obama last year worth more than $60 million.
