Priyanka Chopra reveals how abuse of power in Bollywood held her back

Priyanka Chopra in her recent statement revealed that she had been the victim of celebrity power abuse in the Bollywood film industry many times. She mentioned that often she struggled to get roles in movies at the beginning of her career. 

The star is now hoping to make a visible name for herself in Hollywood. Though she mentioned that South-Asian actors in the Hollywood are still a novelty.

When asked about facing harassment in Bollywood the actress replied that she was removed from movies after signing them. She explained “It was because a girlfriend of the hero or director was recommended after I was signed. That is an abuse of power.”

“I was removed last-minute because I am not someone who caters to the whims and fancies of powerful men. I’m very feisty so people get scared of me. So I was treated a different way because I demanded it.”

She added that: “I didn’t settle because I had the strength of my parents standing behind me. (Yet) there are many women who don’t have the support of their family, friends, colleagues, and peers, who have to do it alone. It is a very difficult journey.”

Her strong-headed personality led to her receiving several honours throughout her illustrious career including this year. She featured in ‘Forbes Top 10 Bollywood celebrities list’ and also topped the list of ‘50 Sexiest Asian Women’.

She said that: “I was at the Emmy after-party, with Aziz Ansari and Riz Ahmed. We were celebrating that there were 4 of us in that room. Just four South Asians in that room of 400. But Aziz said 8 years earlier there was just one.”

But the actress believes that the trends will change in the near future.

She again said: “We are one-fifth of the world’s population. We damn well [need to] have representation in international entertainment. We have to demand it now.”
