Americans Prioritize Eco-Friendly Spring Cleaning

Being environmentally friendly makes people feel better, according to one study. Americans are one nation that is prioritizing the environment through their homes. It was recently revealed that 92% will spring clean their homes in a way that’s considered eco-friendly. The kitchen is the one room where deep cleaning should be carried out as it can be full of harmful bacteria. Here’s how to do it in an environmentally-friendly way.

Surface cleaners

The 2022 Bona Spring Cleaning Poll found that 56% of Americans will spring clean their homes with products that are eco-friendly. Adults with children are more likely to want green products. This is likely to be in response to recent research which found a link between disinfectants and asthma and eczema in children. The most cost-effective and easiest way to get your hands on green cleaning products for your kitchen is to make them yourself. Vinegar, club soda, and tea tree oil can be mixed together to make a disinfectant suitable for your work surfaces. An all-purpose cleaner is easily made with vinegar, water, lemon, and rosemary.

Conserve water

The average American family uses more than 300 gallons of water per day. Much of this is used in the kitchen when doing the dishes and washing clothing. Hand washing dishes can use five times more water than a dishwasher. Make sure your dishwasher is full before switching it on to be as eco-conscious as possible. When it comes to washing and cleaning your clothes, a front loader uses significantly less water than a top loader. A front loader typically has a larger drum. This means you don’t have to put the machine on as frequently which saves energy and water.

Healthy cleaning materials

Earlier this year, CNN reported that kitchen sponges harbor thousands of bacteria because of their shape. General advice is to microwave them or put them in the dishwasher to get them clean. But standard kitchen sponges aren’t eco-friendly as they contain plastic. Instead, use eco-friendly cloths and brushes, such as ones made from bamboo, cellulose, and coir fibers. These materials are biodegradable and allow you to clean your kitchen and the rest of your house efficiently and effectively.

The kitchen is an easy room to clean in an eco-friendly way. Not only will it make your home healthier and cleaner, but you and your family will feel better about green cleaning too.
