Journalist Javed Ghaffari in a video lambasted Mujib ur Rehman Shami for his remarks about Pakistan Tehreek e Insaf’s Chief Imran Khan. Mr. Ghaffari showed Shami’s petrol pump and asked in a sarcastic manner what “amliat” Shami used to become the editor of several newspapers and hold different assets worth millions of rupees?

Mujib ur Rehman Shami, in an earlier program, stated that The PTI chief’s wife Bushra Maneka who is a devout Sufi, was using white magic to embroil the PTI’s main rival PML(N) in various crises.

Shami said that Bushra Bibi is a ‘peerni’ and is known for doing ‘wazaif’. Shami further said that apparently, it is because of Bushra Bibi’s wazaif that the PMLN supremo is committing these mistakes. Nawaz Sharif has been committing mistakes since Khan got married to Bushra Bibi. Shami’s allegations were met with derisions from all over the social media which saw his move as a part of a PML(N) smear campaign.

Pro PML(N) news anchor Absar Alam was given the charge of PEMRA, an independent and constitutionally established federal institution responsible for regulating and issuing channel licenses for establishment of the mass-media culture, print and electronic media.

Mujeeb ur Rehman Shami has taken back his statement regarding Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan’s third wife Bushra Maneka. Shami said in his program that although he had not said anything inappropriate about Bushra Bibi but Yousaf Baig Mirza and Fawad Chaudhry called me and said I should not have given that statement.

The PML(N) is notorious for using personalities within the mainstream media to attack their opponents. Such personalities often derisively known as “lifafas” or envelopes are mainly found in the Urdu press and use rumors and yellow journalism to attack PML(N) opponents. The title lifafa stems from the assumption that these journalists get paid in unmarked envelopes through special couriers.

However, after the 2013 election victory of the PML(N) some media personalities were granted rewards in different ways. Pro Nawaz columnists and media personalities were given lucrative positions in government organizations. Columnist Ata ul Haq Qasmi, renowned for his unabashed pro PML(N) writings was appointed the head of the state run Pakistan Television (PTV). Pro PML(N) news anchor Absar Alam was given the charge of PEMRA, an independent and constitutionally established federal institution responsible for regulating and issuing channel licenses for establishment of the mass-media culture, print and electronic media. Both however have left or been removed after public backlash.
