New Pakistani Ambassador to US wants an early Khan-Trump meeting

Top priority on the agenda of newly appointed Pakistan’s ambassador to the United States, Dr. Asad Majeed Khan is to arrange a Prime Minister Imran Khan and President Donald Trump meeting. Dawn, Pakistan’s leading newspaper, claimed.

Dr. Asad Majeed Khan has reached Washington to take charges after Mr. Ali Jahangir Siqqidue stepped down on Dec 24, 2018.

Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi in October had announced the appointment of Dr. Khan in a process of a reshuffle at major world capitals.

Need is to revive lobbies for effective role-playing in strengthening the bilateral ties, for which Dr. Khan is considered the right choice.

Former Ambassador, Senator Sherry Rehman had commended the step saying that she strongly cheered the appointment of Dr. Khan as he was upright and stellar.

Dr. Khan who was serving as Pakistan’s ambassador in Tokyo before Washington would be Pakistan’s 29th Ambassador to the United States. He was Pakistan’s Deputy Ambassador in Washington from March 2012 to September 2015.

In the first week of January this year, President Trump had expressed the desire to meet PM Khan, saying “I look forward to meeting the folks from the new leadership in Pakis­tan [and] we will be doing that in not-too-distant future”.

Before that, in December 2018, in a letter to PM Khan, President Trump sought Pakistan’s help in bringing the Taliban to the table to end the lingering war in Afghanistan.

The development of changed-tone of US came after PM Khan’s befitting reply to Trump’s statement during an interview, demeaning the efforts of Pakistan against the war on terror and defending cutting aid to Pakistan.

PM Khan set the records straight in a detailed social media post bashing President Trump’s statement and giving facts about the suffering of Pakistan; in terms of economic loss and human casualties.

Analysts opine that the efforts of Dr. Khan would bear fruit in case of successful US-Taliban talks; which seems to be already in the right direction. Need is to revive lobbies for effective role-playing in strengthening the bilateral ties, for which Dr. Khan is considered the right choice.
