Omar Ayub Named Leader of the Opposition in Pakistan’s National Assembly

During the meeting where this decision was made, opposition members Gohar Ali Khan and Malik Amir Dogar were also present, engaging in discussions regarding Ayub's nomination.

Omar Ayub, a prominent figure within the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), has been officially designated as the leader of the opposition in the National Assembly, as announced by the lower house secretariat on Tuesday.

Following the completion of necessary procedures, NA Speaker Ayaz Sadiq has formally recognized Ayub as the opposition leader, a decision that was made after Ayub made a request to the speaker.

During the meeting where this decision was made, opposition members Gohar Ali Khan and Malik Amir Dogar were also present, engaging in discussions regarding Ayub’s nomination.

In a statement via Twitter, the NA secretariat confirmed Ayub’s appointment as the Leader of the Opposition, in accordance with Rule 39 of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business of the National Assembly.

Ayub’s candidacy was put forward with the support of the majority of the opposition members, and no other candidate submitted their papers for nomination by the April 1 deadline.

On March 10, the PTI-Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) alliance had formally endorsed Ayub as their candidate for the opposition leader position, with significant support from lawmakers such as Malik Amir Dogar, Sahibzada Hamid Raza, Ali Muhammad Khan, Riaz Fatiana, and Dr. Nisar Jat, among others, who submitted the necessary documents to the speaker’s office, backed by signatures from 92 SIC lawmakers.
