The launch of the Association of Muslim Surveyors in UK

The Association of Muslim Surveyors aims to promote diversity and inclusion in the real estate industry, empowering British Muslims.

The Association of Muslim Surveyors (AMS) has been founded in the UK to address the challenges faced by British Muslims working in the real estate and construction sectors. The initiative aims to provide a platform for networking, knowledge-sharing, and professional development, while promoting diversity, equity, and inclusivity in the industry.

Challenges in the Industry

Despite efforts to promote diversity and inclusion in the UK workforce, Muslim professionals continue to face various challenges, including discrimination, lack of representation, and underemployment. Islamophobia is a real problem that has a significant impact on the career prospects of British Muslims in the real estate and construction sectors. According to Sybil Taunton, head of diversity, equity, and inclusion at the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), the industry needs to have more uncomfortable conversations about Islamophobia and other forms of discrimination that hinder the progress of Muslim professionals in the industry.

Role of AMS

The AMS is a crucial initiative that provides a platform for Muslim professionals to connect, share knowledge, and support one another. The association is open to all, including students, qualified professionals, and experts who may want to pass on their knowledge. By bringing together professionals from diverse backgrounds, the AMS aims to promote a culture of inclusivity and collaboration in the industry. This, in turn, can help to create a more supportive work environment for Muslim professionals, where they can thrive and reach their full potential.

The Power of Networks

The AMS demonstrates the power of networks in promoting diversity and inclusivity in the industry. As Sybil Taunton notes, when individuals come together as a network, they can drive movements and inspire future generations to explore careers in the industry. The AMS has the potential to drive a recruitment piece for future generations and provide a safe space for British Muslims to explore careers in the property and real estate sectors. The association’s first event, attended by over 85 people from around the UK, highlights the power of networks in bringing people together and creating a sense of community.

Professional Voice

The AMS aims to give British Muslims in the real estate and construction sectors a professional voice, enabling them to advocate for their rights and interests. As Jang Shabbir, a British Muslim who is managing director and head of real estate of international consulting group ValuStrat’s Saudi Arabia operations notes, the initiative has great potential, and the word is getting around the Middle East as well. The AMS can serve as a model for other Muslim professionals in the region who are looking to create networks and promote diversity and inclusivity in their respective industries.
