Acclaimed American Rapper Mac Miller dies at 26

News Desk |

American Rapper Mac Miller has been found dead of an apparent drug overdose in his home in California. The 26-year-old artist was famous not only for his hip-hop infused songs but also his public relationship with singer and actress Ariana Grande. He was said to be unresponsive around noon when a friend of his called 911 to send in help after Miller went into Cardiac arrest. Upon arrival, the police found the rapper unresponsive and he was declared dead.

“The music artist known as Mac Miller died today in his Studio City home,” the LA County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner said in a statement. “At this time, an autopsy is pending and a cause of death has not been determined.”

“I’m a human being. But it was the best thing that could have happened. I needed that. I needed to run into that light pole and literally, like, have the whole thing stop.”

The rapper had previously talked about his struggle with promethazine and codeine addiction through interviews and in his raps. His addiction issues are also what is said to be what caused him to break up with Grande. The pair collaborated on Grande’s breakout hit The Way and even performed together at Manchester’s One Love Manchester concert to honor the victims of the Manchester bombing.

The rapper was arrested for DUI charges just this May and he opened up about them as recently as July stating: “I made a stupid mistake,” Miller said during an interview with Beats 1 host Zayn Lowe in July. “I’m a human being. But it was the best thing that could have happened. I needed that. I needed to run into that light pole and literally, like, have the whole thing stop.”

The rapper rose to fame with his debut album Blue Slide Park in 2011, which became the first independently distributed album to top the Billboard 200 since 1995. His most recent album ‘Swimming’ was his most critically acclaimed album to date with critics appreciating his mature lyrics and style. As the news of his death broke celebrities were quick to send out their grievances.

Rapper “Chance the Rapper” tweeted:

I don’t know what to say Mac Miller took me on my second tour ever. But beyond helping me launch my career he was one of the sweetest guys I ever knew. Great man. I loved him for real. I’m completely broken. God bless him.

Even the See You Again hitmaker Charlie Puth managed to write out how sad he was at Miller’s passing

“I can’t keep losing friends like this…I wish I spent more time with you these past weeks…I’m so sorry… rip MAC…you wrote the soundtrack to my college years and I’m so happy I got to know you…this sucks this really really sucks.”

The rapper isn’t the first to die this year. Earlier in 2018 XXXTenacion was killed in a shooting. On July 24, American artist Demi Lovato was also rushed to the hospital after overdosing on drugs. Luckily she was able to be saved in time and is now seeking recovery. A proper cause of death will be formally announced after the autopsy.
