In first, Pakistani Judge consults ChatGPT in rape case

After deciding the case, the judge said in his judgment that he decided to take an opinion from ChatGPT as an experiment to understand how this technology could help the judiciary in the future.

In first, a Pakistani judge in the local court uses AI ChatGPT for a decision in a sexual offense case. Judge used ChatGPT, an artificial intelligence chatbot developed by OpenAI, to decide on a bail plea filed by the juvenile suspect in a sexual abuse case.

Judge Muhammad Amir in Mandi Bahauddin took legal consultation from ChatGPT in the case of the bail petition filed by a 13-year-old boy in case of allegedly attempting to rape a 9-year-old boy. He asked the chatbot if a juvenile could be entitled to a pre-arrest bail.

Judge concluded that there is still a long way to go before judges can rely on AI. He, however, believes that if judges develop a relationship with AI tools like ChatGPT or Google Bard, and put the right questions to it based on the available data, facts, and circumstances of the case, it can reduce the burden on the human mind by giving relevant and reliable answers.

Judge Amir had concluded that the suspect can be granted bail owing to the loopholes in the case. He said that FIR was lodged two days after the incident and both families had personal enmity.

ADSJ Judge remarked that without a doubt sexual harassment is a serious case but the possibility of the case being fake cannot be ruled out. After deciding the case, the judge said in his judgment that he decided to take an opinion from ChatGPT as an experiment to understand how this technology could help the judiciary in the future.

Judge asked questions like if the 13-year-old boy can be granted post-arrest bail. Software said that the Juvenile Justice System Act 2018 is enforced in Pakistan and its Section 12 allows the court to grant conditional bail to the suspect. He asked 18 questions about the AI software. When given all the facts, the software said that bail can be granted to the boy.
