Johar reflected on the show’s remarkable journey, acknowledging the controversies, laughter, debates and memorable conversations that made it one of Bollywood’s most recognisable entertainment programmes.
In his farewell message, the filmmaker expressed gratitude to audiences who continued to watch the show, even as its episodes frequently sparked heated discussions on social media.
“Saying goodbye is emotional, but it also feels right,” Johar said, inviting viewers to join him for one final cup of coffee.
The announcement has generated excitement and nostalgia among fans, many of whom have followed the show since its debut in 2004.
Karan Johar Reflects on the Show’s 22-Year Journey
‘Koffee With Karan’ first aired in 2004 and quickly became a popular platform for Bollywood celebrities to discuss their personal lives, professional journeys, relationships and industry experiences.
Johar revealed that the idea for the show originated during a conversation with his late father, renowned film producer Yash Johar.
Although his father was initially sceptical about the concept, the filmmaker eventually brought the idea to television, creating a format that would become a major part of Indian pop culture.
Over the years, the programme has featured some of the biggest names in Indian cinema, including Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, Kareena Kapoor, Deepika Padukone, Ranbir Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra.
The show has completed eight seasons and 161 episodes, with its ninth season now set to mark the end of an era.
Controversies, Confessions and Viral Moments
One of the biggest reasons behind the show’s popularity has been its ability to generate headlines through candid celebrity conversations and controversial remarks.
From its signature rapid-fire rounds and coffee hampers to unexpected confessions, ‘Koffee With Karan’ has consistently delivered moments that fuelled entertainment news and social media discussions.
Among its most talked-about episodes was actress Kangana Ranaut’s appearance, during which she criticised Johar and accused Bollywood of favouring industry insiders over outsiders. Her comments brought the debate over nepotism in Bollywood into the mainstream.
Other memorable moments included Deepika Padukone and Sonam Kapoor’s candid remarks about fellow actors, Alia Bhatt’s widely discussed rapid-fire answer about the president of India and several celebrity revelations about relationships and friendships.
Johar himself acknowledged the controversies and online criticism associated with the programme in the promotional video, while also celebrating the audience’s continued interest.
