Land of Mahatma Gandhi becoming land of gang rapists: Malika Sherawat

News Desk |

Indian actress Malika Sherawat expressing her dissatisfaction over the increasing rape cases in India said the country is becoming a ‘land of gang rapists’ from the ‘land of Gandhi’. She offered a controversial statement while talking to media at the special screening of ‘Daas Dev’.

The actress said, “I think what’s happening with women and children of this country is absolutely shameful. From the land of Gandhi, we have become a land of gang rapists and I think it’s the media in the country that is really a strong force today. So all hopes are pinned on the media.”

“If it’s not in the media, then nobody would know about these cases. I think because of pressure from the media, these new laws have been enforced. So we are really thankful to the media for this,” she added.

She also said, “We haven’t been able to protect women and children of our country and I have been reading about such kind of crimes on a daily basis in newspapers.” The people on social media opposed her statement.

Over the past few years, India is witnessing the ever-increasing number of rape cases. The country was recently shaken with Asifa Bano’s rape case in Indian Occupied Kashmir.

A huge outburst of emotions was experienced as the country demanded the harshest punishment for the culprits. Minors and young girls have potentially been at higher risk than middle-aged women.

Recently, President of India Ram Nath Kovind on April 22nd signed the legislation that will award death sentence to the culprits raping the girls below 12. Similar calls are made in Pakistan too after the country witnessed a brutal rape case of a seven-year-old Zainab in Kasur.
