Pakistan, Russia to enhance naval cooperation

The Pakistan and Russian navies on Wednesday agreed to strengthen bilateral cooperation to deal with challenges related to maritime security.

According to Pakistan Navy’s official press release, during their meeting at Saint Petersburg, Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Zafar Mahmood Abbasi and Commander-in-Chief of Russian Navy Admiral Vladimir Korolyov decided to step up “efforts to effectively confront the trans-national challenges and threats in the maritime domain”.

Admiral Abbasi is on a visit to Russia. The Navy expects that the chief’s visit to Russia would strengthen defence ties between the two countries. Admiral Abbasi and Admiral Korolyov in their meeting deliberated on various avenues of cooperation between the two navies.

Chief of the Naval Staff briefed Admiral Vladimir Korolyov regarding forthcoming Multinational Naval Exercise AMAN-19 which is being hosted by Pakistan in the 1st quarter of 2019.  Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Navy lauded the role and contributions of Pakistan Navy in maintaining peace and stability in the maritime domain through global collaboration.

Both the dignitaries agreed upon the need for enhancing efforts to effectively confront the trans-national challenges and threats in the maritime domain. During the visit, the Naval Chief also visited Admiral Nakhimov Naval Cadet School and interacted with Russian Naval cadets. Chief of the Naval Staff also laid the floral wreath at War Memorial Complex.

It is expected that the visit of the Naval Chief to the Russian Federation will enhance and expand defense ties between the two countries in general and Navies in particular.
