‘Saawan’ dropped from final Oscars Nomination

News Desk |

Pakistan’s official submission to Oscar’s nomination for the best foreign language film has been removed from the list. Also, India’s submission ‘Newton’ also did not make the final list of nominees.

The final list issued suggests nine selections that will be competing for the title of ‘Best Foreign Language Film’. The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences has finalized films ‘A Fantastic Woman’ (Chile), ‘In Fade ‘(Germany), ‘On Body and Soul’ (Hungary), ‘Foxtrot’ (Israel), ‘The Insult’ (Lebanon), ‘Loveless’ (Russia), ‘Felicite’ (Senegal), ‘The Wound’ (South Africa) and, ‘The Square’ (Sweden).

Despite being dropped from the Oscars nomination, ‘Saawan’ has gained the appreciation from international audiences and off course domestic ones.

Pakistan submitted Farman Alma’s ‘Saawan’. The movie is a story of a polio-stricken boy who was rejected by society, harassed by friends, abandoned by his father in the deserts of Baluchistan to die. But, his mother’s love gave him the strength to survive.

‘Saawan’ has been exhibited at various international film festivals and has won six international awards. Recently, Alam informed that he received a letter from Indian film director Sunit Tandon that invited him to showcase his movie at a film festival in India.

The letter said, “the festival was honored to present the film in the Cinema of the World section.” However, ostensibly due to scheduling constraints, the organizers later apologized Alam for the non-inclusion of the movie.

Alam expressing his disappointment said, “I was excited to take part in the festival and share my film with an Indian audience. It would have been an honor for me to share my work and I was hoping to meet filmmakers from India as well as around the world,” said Alam in an email to an Indian publication.

“It was very disappointing and heartbreaking for me to hear this news as I was looking forward to attending this festival,” said Alam. Major Pakistani actors since 2016, have been stopped from working in India due to pressure from Hindu right wingers.
