Jan 10 should be marked as ‘Zainab Day’, urges her father

The father of Zainab Ansari, the victim of Kasur’s rape-murder incident has demanded the government of Pakistan to dedicate the day January 10 to her memory, as the horrific incident of child abuse marks one year.

Amin Ansari stated he has arranged a gathering on Jan 10 in remembrance of his daughter Zainab and urged the government to mark it as ‘Zainab Day’ that will highlight the importance of ensuring safety and protection of our children. He said child abuse incidents were on the rise and it’s time the state showed its resolve to track down the perpetrators.

The six-year-old Zainab went missing on Jan 4 but five days later her body was discovered from the heaps of trash.

The incident shook the entire country as soon as it was reported on media. ‘Justice For Zainab’ started trending on the social media, the civilians, social rights activist and celebrities came out on streets and protested for the justice for Zainab.

The government eventually caved into the national and international pressure and formed a joint investigative team to bring to the surface the culprit behind the heinous crime. Law enforcement agencies collected the DNA of 1150 suspects in the case and it was the DNA of Imran Ali that matched, who worked as the mason in Kasur.

The investigation that proceeded after his arrests revealed that he was behind the rape and murder of seven other minor girls. Imran Ali was eventually executed on Oct 17 last year. The residents of Kasur demanded the public hanging of Imran Ali. Despite the massive outcry, the government still lag behind in implementing the child protection law in full spirit.
