Pakistan mourns loss of legendary orator Zia Mohyeddin

The funeral prayers for Zia Mohyeddin will be offered in Karachi’s Defence Phase 4 after Zuhur today. Pakistan's civic society is condoling the loss of the master thespian on social media.

Eminent actor, director, and television host Zia Mohyeddin passed away at the age of 91 on Monday. Many are taking to social media to mourn the loss of Pakistan’s greatest orator.

According to the details, Zia Mohyeddin was admitted to the hospital due to fever and severe abdominal pain. It was later found in an ultrasound that he was having intestinal issues and then underwent an operation after which he was shifted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the hospital, where he breathed his last.

Zia Mohyeddin enjoyed legendary status in Pakistan for his services in theatre and literary recitations. He worked as an actor in the United Kingdom for 47 years and also produced some timeless programming for PTV before engaging himself with training theatre artists.

Owing to his countless contributions to the field of theatre, he was conferred with Sitara-i-Imtiaz in 2003 and Hilal-i-Imtiaz in 2012. He was also presented with Lifetime Achievement Award on 29 November 2017 by the Pakistani community living in Dubai and given by the Pakistan Ambassador in the United Arab Emirates.

“Distinguished Zia Mohyeddin-Pakistan’s iconic talent, an international star is no more with us. Had the privilege of working with him.Truly an inspiration in hosting. He was a great host, actor, director, producer, and voice-over artist,” PTI Senator Faisal Javed Khan said.

“It was the year 2003 when I first worked with Zia Mohyeddin. He had a huge grip on pronunciation in many languages. He was one of the most expensive voiceover artists of Pakistan,” he further added.

“My teacher… My mentor is no more… May Allah have mercy on him. Sir Zia Mohyeddin, you will be missed,” Hum News host Ovais Mangalwala said.

“We mourn the loss of the legendary Zia Mohyeddin, a true icon of Pakistan’s art and culture. He was an intellectual, a great human, and an esteemed friend to many. His contributions to the country and arts will never be forgotten,” Ministry of Information and Broadcasting said in its statement.

“Ziya sahab was a legend and an enormous asset for Pakistan, an intellectual, and an icon of the country’s art and culture. He was a great human and an esteemed family friend. This is an irreparable loss for all of us,” Barrister Syed Ali Zafar said. 

The passing away of Zia Mohyeddin comes shortly after the death of renowned drama writer and poet Amjad Islam Amjad who passed away on Friday.
