Former DG ISPR Asif Ghafoor among six promoted to Lieutenant-General rank in Pakistan Army

ISPR the media wing of the Pakistan Army, announced six army officers' promotion, including Maj General Asif Ghafoor, on Wednesday.

ISPR, a media wing of the Pakistan Army, announced six army officers, including Maj General Asif Ghafoor, have been promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-General. The statement was released on Twitter.

The officers promoted include Major-General Akhtar Nawaz, Major-General Sardar Hassan Azhar Hayat, Major-General Asif Ghafoor, Major-General Salman Fayyaz, Major-General Sarfraz Ali, and Major-General Muhammad Ali.

“Promotions in the #Army: 6 Major Generals have been promoted to the Rank of Lieutenant General. Those promoted include MG Akhtar Nawaz, MG Sardar Hassan Azhar Hayat, MG Asif Ghafoor, MG Salman Fayyaz Ghani, MG Sarfraz Ali, MG Muhammad Ali,” wrote ISPR in a tweet.

Social media brimmed with messages of felicitation for Lt. Gen Asif Ghafoor on his promotion. His fans and followers released his videos on Twitter to express their pleasure in his success. The netizens wished him success on his new rank.

Earlier this year, Ghafoor has ended his stint as DG ISPR. Major General Babar Iftikhar replaced him as the new DG ISPR.

Asif Ghafoor was appointed DG ISPR back in 2016, and upon finishing his tenure as head of the military’s information wing, he was posted as GOC 40th Infantry Division in Okara.

New Postings

Following the announcement, ISPR also informed the new posts of the promoted six army officers. Lt. Gen Ghafoor has been posted as the’ Inspector General Communication & Information Technology.

“Posting / Appointments: Lt Gen Majid Ehsan posted as Inspector General Arms, Lt Gen Syed Muhammad Adnan, Inspector General Training & Evaluation, Lt Gen Sardar Hassan Azhar Hayat, Military Secretary & Lt Gen Asif Ghafoor, Inspector General Communication & Information Technology,” wrote ISPR.

 

“Posting & Appointments: Lt Gen Muhammad Abdul Aziz, Comd Lhr Corps, Lt Gen Muhammad Waseem Ashraf, Comd Multan Corps, Lt Gen Nadeem Ahmed Anjum, Comd Kci Corps, Lt Gen Khalid Zia, Comd Bahawalpur Corps, Lt Gen Sarfraz Ali, Comd Southern Command & Lt Gen Muhammad Ali, Comd ASFC,” added ISPR further.

A brief look at the life of Asif Ghafoor

Major General Asif Ghafoor had been the Director-General of Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), spokesperson of Pakistan Armed Forces, since 26 December 2016. He was commissioned in an 87 SP Medium Regiment Artillery in September 1988.

Gen. Ghafoor is a graduate of Command & Staff College Quetta, Command & Staff College Bandung (Indonesia), and National Defence University, Islamabad. He holds a master’s degree in Strategic Studies.

The General has served on various staff, instructional, and commands assignments, including Brigade Major Infantry Brigade, Assistant Military Secretary MS Branch, GSO-I Military Operations Directorate, GHQ, Director Military Operations in Military Operations Directorate, GHQ. He has been on the faculty of Command and Staff College, Quetta.
