In November 2021, disturbing news emerged that a young fourth-year medical student in Larkana allegedly committed suicide in her hostel room. Pertinent to mention, Dr. Nosheen studied at Chandika Medical college.

Dr. Nosheen Kazmi’s roommate found her hanging from the ceiling with her feet almost touching the table. Due to this detail, there were claims of alleged foul play. Larkana SSP launched an investigation. Dr. Nosheen’s family also rejected the post-mortem report into the alleged hanging and said that his daughter could not commit suicide. Moreover, a student’s organisation raised concerns over frequent suicide cases of medical students.

In 2019, Dr. Nimrita, another student of Chandika Medical college was also found dead under mysterious circumstances in her hostel room. Interestingly, the institute claimed she committed suicide. However, students of the university held protests. As a result, authorities launched a thorough investigation.

The final autopsy report revealed that Dr. Nimrita Kumari was sexually abused before being murdered. A DNA test confirmed the presence of a male DNA profile indicated from semen residue on the deceased’s clothes.

DNA reports point to the same person

Jamshoro’s Forensic and Molecular Biology Laboratory conducted the DNA tests which mark the same person. This is an important development as it indicates that perhaps Dr. Nosheen suffered the same horrendous fate as Dr. Nimrita.

As a result, authorities requested to take blood samples of every male entering and leaving the hostel. This is will enable them to match the sample for arresting the suspect.

Pertinent to mention, a final year MBBS student of the People’s University of Medical and Health Sciences For Women (PUMHSW) student named Parveen Rind also gave a disturbing account of sexual harrasment in the university.

She complained that senior officers of the university harassed her and subjected her to torture. Rind also stated that daughters in Sindh do not commit suicide but perpetrators kill them and then hang them.

As a result, Leader of the Opposition in Sindh Assembly, Haleem Adil Sheikh, on Thursday condemned acts of harassment and violence against Rind. He also demanded immediate arrest of the culprits.
