MQM-P’s Kamran Tessori to take oath as Sindh governor today

The oath-taking ceremony will take place at 5 pm today. Chief Justice Sindh High Court Justice Ahmed Ali Shaikh will administer the oath to Kamran Tessori.

MQM-P leader Kamran Tessori will take oath as the 34th governor of Sindh today (Monday) at a ceremony scheduled to be held at Governor’s House.

According to the details, the oath-taking ceremony will take place at 5 pm today. Chief Justice Sindh High Court Justice Ahmed Ali Shaikh will administer the oath to Kamran Tessori. Dignitaries, leaders of political parties, and notables belonging to various walks of life will attend the ceremony.

Earlier, President Dr. Arif Alvi approved the appointment of Kamran Tessori as Sindh governor as per Article 101-1 of the constitution of Pakistan. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif moved the summary to the presidency.

Kamran Tessori’s appointment is a major development as the post of the Sindh Governor remained vacant for five months after PTI’s Imran Ismail resigned in protest following Chairman and former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s ouster in April 2022.

Controversy around Kamran Tessori

Pertinent to mention that in 2017, Kamran Tessori left the party saying he is not happy with the party leadership. He claimed that he was not given a proper chance to take part in the decision-making process despite holding a senior position in the party. However, in a surprise move, he was re-inducted into the party last month. His re-induction received a lot of backlash from senior MQM-P leaders.

Kamran Tessori has always been a controversial figure in the MQM-P. The party — which had split into MQM-Pakistan and MQM-London following founder Altaf Hussain’s incendiary speech on Aug 22, 2016 — was further divided into MQM-Bahadurabad and MQM-PIB over the issue of giving a party ticket to businessman-turned-politician Kamran Tessori, then a deputy convener and favorite of Dr. Farooq Sattar, to contest Senate elections in March 2018.

The MQM-P coordination committee removed Dr. Farooq Sattar from the convener’s post he insisted on awarding the party ticket to Kamran Tessori in a by-election. Dr. Farooq Sattar parted ways with the Bahadurabad faction and formed his own group — MQM-PIB. Therefore, Kamran Tessori is blamed for the party breaking up.

In a statement issued after the president’s approval for Kamran Tessori’s appointment as Sindh Governor, an MQM-P spokesperson said that Kamran Tessori will play the role of bridge between Sindh and the Centre.
