Pakistan celebrates first gold medal win in Commonwealth Games 2022

Since Pakistan has little to rejoice about these days owing to the economic and political turmoil, the wins by Hussain Shah and Nooh Dastagir Butt are being celebrated by the nation. 

In a major achievement, Pakistan won its first gold medal in the Commonwealth Games (CWG) 2022. Weightlifter Nooh Dastagir Butt bagged the maiden gold medal with a record lift of 405kg.

This is the first gold for Pakistan in any category in the ongoing games in the United Kingdom city of Birmingham. During CWG 2022, Hussain Shah won a bronze medal which is the first medal in the games. Judoka Hussain Shah won the bronze medal after he downed his South African opponent.

However, Butt provided a highlight for Pakistan by winning the first gold medal. In the 109+kg category, Nooh Dastagir Butt lifted 173kg in snatch, setting a new CWG record. In clean and jerk, Butt lifted 232kg to set another record. Overall, Butt lifted 405kg which was also a CWG record.

Interestingly, Nooh Dastagir Butt dedicated his achievement to his father. The weightlifter said that his father trains him at home.

“It was hard work and dedication that made me win this gold. Winning a medal for your country is always a proud moment. And, gold is something special,” Nooh Dastagir told the media.

“It was not easy for me to lift such a heavy weight. But, I pulled off doing it with hard work of 12 to 13 years. I dedicate this gold to my father, who worked for 12 years and helped me reach this stage,” the gold medalist added.

Since Pakistan has little to rejoice about these days owing to the economic and political turmoil, the wins by Hussain Shah and Nooh Dastagir Butt are being celebrated by the nation.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif congratulated the Pakistani athlete who provided this proud moment for Pakistan.

Similarly, PTI also congratulated 24-year-old Nooh Dastagir, saying the nation is extremely proud of him.

“Weightlifter Muhammad Nooh Dastagir Butt wins gold medal for Pakistan in Commonwealth Games 2022 with a record lift 405 kg. Congrats Nooh, the whole nation is extremely proud of you,” PTI tweeted.
