PTI resigns from National Assembly

PTI has decided to officially resign from National Assembly. The decision was taken during today's parliamentary meeting of PTI.

PTI has decided to resign from the National Assembly. The decision was taken during the PTI Parliamentary meeting today ahead of the election for the new prime minister of Pakistan.

According to details by the media, Imran Khan refused to further engage with the Opposition in the assembly. He said he himself will resign. To clarify, after being removed from power, Imran Khan is now the leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly. He also said members do not have to resign if they do not wish to.

However, all PTI members expressed support for Imran Khan and stated that they too will resign from the National Assembly.

Confirming the development, former Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry tweeted that all members will submit their resignation to the Speaker of the Assembly.

“The parliamentary party has decided to resign from the assemblies. We do not accept this imported government,” Farrukh Habib also tweeted.

Interestingly, this was the first meeting of the parliamentary party after Imran Khan’s removal from the office of prime minister.

Videos shared from PTI Twitter handle shows party lawmakers warmly welcoming Imran Khan as he reached the parliament. In a brief talk to media, the former PM said: “Allah Izzat Dainay Wala Hai” [It is the Almighty who gives respect].

The Opposition successfully managed to oust Imran Khan from power with the no-confidence motion. As a result, the Opposition is now preparing to bring in a new government.

At 2 pm, the National Assembly will decide on a new prime minister. PML-N President Shehbaz Sharif and PTI leader and former foreign minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi are the candidates. However, there is a higher probability of success for Shehbaz Sharif.

PTI was divided?

Moreover, owing to the defeat, PTI considered resigning from the National Assembly altogether. Important to note, the idea divided PTI with some members supporting it, and others opposing it.

In this regard, PTI’s parliamentary party meeting finalised the strategy for the PM’s election and decided about en masse resignations from the National Assembly.

According to the details, the majority of PTI members were against mass resignations. These included Shah Mehmood Qureshi, Faisal Javed Khan, and Fakhar Awan. On the other hand, Fawad Chaudhry, Sheikh Rasheed, and Hammad Azhar believe that PTI MNAs should resign.
