Punishment for dowry violators essential after dowry bill becomes act: Chairman CII

Chairman Council for Islamic Ideology (CII) Qibla Ayyaz has said it will become mandatory to punish the violators after dowry prohibition bill takes the shape of act.

Talking to a private TV Channel Thursday he said dowry should not be meant for show off or ostentatious practice. Display or show off has been declared disagreeable in Shariah. He underlined that Ministry of religious affairs is working for abolition of dowry.

It is pertinent to mention here that government has decided to introduce amendment in dowry prohibition act-1976 to arrest the growing demand of dowry and protect the bride in the society.

The ministry of religious affairs has recommended to impose ban on making dowry demand by bridegroom and display of dowry.

Under this bill the cost of dowry and gifts to be given to the bride will not surpass the cost of 4 tollas gold. Section 3 of dowry prohibition act will be amended to ensure implementation of this restriction.
