Sanjay Dutt: links to Bombay blasts impedes US visa for medical treatment

“US policies are if one is convicted in any case for 5 years and above, they just need a special waiver for getting the visa. Fortunately, one of his close friends helped the actor secure a five-year visa on medical grounds," reveals a close source to Indian media.

Report says Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt faced hurdles in acquiring US Visa on medical grounds due to his connection with the Bombay blasts. Sanjay Dutt is suffering from third stage lung cancer and had applied for the US visa soon after he learned of his diagnosis.

Currently, Sanjay Dutt is getting initial treatment at the Andheri Hospital in Mumbai. He will soon travel to the USA for advanced treatment upon his visa arrival. Sanjay Dutt will head to New York in the USA for his cancer treatment along with his wife Manayata Dutt and Priya.

It wasn’t easy to get the clearance say sources

According to a source cited by Mid-Day, “Sanju had applied for the visa as soon as he learned of the diagnosis. However, initially, it wasn’t easy to get the clearance. He was acquitted in the 1993 Bombay Blasts but convicted in the arms act.”

“US policies are if one is convicted in any case for 5 years and above, they just need a special waiver for getting the visa. Fortunately, one of his close friends helped the actor secure a five-year visa on medical grounds. He is expected to fly to New York with Maanayata and Priya, where he will pursue treatment at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Centre,” added the source.

“Sanju was considering traveling to Singapore if the US plan did not materialize. Thankfully, everything has worked out swiftly, and he is expected to leave at the earliest,” it was revealed further.

Sanjay Dutt: 1993 Bombay Blasts

The 1993 Mumbai bombings were a series of 12 bomb explosions that took place in Mumbai, India, then known as Bombay, on 12 March 1993. The single-day attacks resulted in 257 fatalities and 1,400 injuries. Sanjay Dutt was arrested in 1993 by Crime Branch at Mumbai Airport on charges of possession of Ak 56 rifle, a 9 mm pistol and ammunition in connection to the Bombay Blasts. The arms were the part of the consignment used in the blasts. He spent 20 months in jail.

Dutt was charged with five offenses including criminal conspiracy and illegal possession of weapons. The trial court had cleared him of criminal conspiracy but found him guilty of illegally possessing the rifle and pistol. Sanjay Dutt argued that he acquired the necessary weapons for the protection of his family during the Hindu-Muslim riots following the demolition of the Babri Mosque in Ayodhya. The actor has been on bail since 2007 when he appealed against his original sentence of six years. The Supreme Court reduced it to five years. The Bombay blasts were done by the city’s Muslim-dominated underworld leader Dawood Ibrahim in retaliation to the demolition of the mosque.

In one of his interviews with Simi Garewal, he was asked about the complexities and challenges in his life. “I don’t remember any phase in my life where there have been no problems,” She asked him if was “strange fate that makes you go through one ordeal after the other”. “Maybe I am the chosen one,” he replied.
