Alcohol Saga: Begum Nawazish Ali arrested for illegal possession

News Analysis |

Karachi police have arrested TV host and actor Ali Saleem, aka Begum Nawazish Ali, for possessing liquor and allegedly indulging in suspicious activities in a raid on a private property on the evening of 4th September. According to SSP South Umar Shahid, police raided a bungalow in the city’s Clifton area after receiving information of a kidnapped child.

Local star Meera, on Wednesday, criticized the authorities for arresting Saleem over alleged possession of liquor. “He is an innocent man”, Meera Jee claimed to a local publication. “I’m still surprised why Ali has been arrested,” Meera continued. “I would like to request the government to release him and arrest the actual criminals, not artists. We are innocent and hardworking.”

In a shocking development, during the inspection, the CJP found two bottles of liquor in the room of the ex-minister and PPP leader Sharjeel Memon. Surprisingly, Memon’s driver Jan Mohammad told media that the bottles spotted by the CJP did not contain liquor. One of the bottles contained honey while the other contained cooking oil, he claimed.

Meera, who was present at the time when officers, dressed as civilians, raided the bungalow, revealed there were others present in the bungalow where they were shooting for a film. “The set was ready and our shooting was canceled after the incident. We have no idea where Ali is right now,” added the actor. “Since it was a film set, there are certain props required as per the script. However, during his arrest, there wasn’t a single item that was deemed objectionable.”

Several people were taken into custody during the raid, including Ali Saleem a.k.a Begum Nawazish. Liquor bottles were also recovered at the bungalow. The police have registered a case of drugs against the suspects. The bungalow is reportedly used as a guest house. On another prominent alcohol misadventure, Sharjeel Memon, PPP’s incarcerated leader made headlines when liquor bottles were recovered from his hospital room-cum-sub jail, by none other than the Chief Justice of Pakistan himself, GVS earlier reported.

The Supreme Court (SC) on Tuesday, 4th of September, decided to transfer Pakistan People’s Party leader Sharjeel Memon to a prison in Punjab. Commenting on his earlier visit to Sharjeel’s hospital room, Justice Nisar said it was the first that he saw a sub-jail which was better than most suites in a hotel.  “I had visited the jail he was staying in before, I had to check the sub-jail now,” the CJP added. Justice Nisar added that as the provincial government was not cooperating, Sharjeel would be transferred to Punjab and further remarked that judges should not worry as the Constitution granted them “immense power” to enforce judgments.
